Salmon runs

Named after the Secretary of State who fought for and negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia, Seward is a pleasant and picturesque town on the Kenai Peninsula.  It also marks Mile 0 of the historic Iditarod Trail and is one of the most lucrative fisheries port in the country.  Throughout the peninsula we’ve come across hundreds of anglers looking to pull out some of the tasty Pacific Salmon during one of the renowned “runs”.  We were naïve not to realize how popular sport fishing is in Alaska and one transplant from Texas even asked me what I was doing here if I don’t fish or hunt.  We’ve learned a little about the “spawning” phenomenon as curious onlookers and are impressed with the cycle of life that God created.  As the final act before dying, salmon that are able to out-maneuver the bears, eagles, and fishermen and make it back to their birth river, procreate and then expire.  The last stage in the process that spans many years and thousands of miles is when their bodies decompose to provide food for other species and help fertilize the streams in a perfect coexistence with Mother Nature.   

Eles tem o dom de nascer, percorrer kilômetros de distância sozinhos, para diferentes direções, oceanos, rios e lagos e voltar para casa já quando adulto para dar vida, deixar um pedaçinho deles com seus filhotes. Esse é o Salmão, minha gente! Sabe aquele peixe caro, saboroso e cheio de vitaminas, pois é ele mesmo que nem imaginamos como é o processo de procriação por trás das águas. O macho quando adulto tende a voltar ao mesmo rio/lago que nasceu, sua cabeça muda de cor e com esses sintomas ele sabe que chegou a sua hora. A fêmea, volta ao lar também, escolhe um pequeno espaço, coloca seus ovinhos (que geralmente quem come sushi, adora : )) e o macho, esperto, sentindo o cheiro vem e deposita seu esperma. Sem contato nenhum, sem escolher o marido ou esposa assim, os ovinhos viram somente olhinhos, depois o girinos e depois um peixinho pequeno que já nasce sabendo nadar (rsrs), se torna grande, forte e pronto para ser comido (se não conseguir escapar das pregas da vida) ou ele voltará para sua terra no futuro. Os pais, por consequencia e lei natural de vida, depois de algumas horas da procriação, morrem. Triste, porém realidade, depois de entregarem sua energia, amor e vida os mesmos perdem todas as suas forças …
