Exit Glacier

Our first experience seeing blue glacier ice up close was at the Kenai Fjords National Park a bit outside of Seward.  The Exit Glacier is notable for being a drive up glacier that’s separated by just a short, paved, accessible hike from the parking lot outside the visitor’s center.  It’s a small glacier, relatively speaking, at the edge of the Harding Icefield whose name came about because it served as the exit for the icefield’s first recorded crossing.  Dividing two mountains, it looks like a huge waterfall that was literally frozen in time.  After reaching the main viewing area, we opted to continue to the top so we could get a better view of the vast expanse of ice that stretches past the horizon.  As the largest icefield in the US, Harding encompasses more than 1,100 square miles of thousands of feet of frozen H2O that gives a glimpse into the Ice Age.  The 8.2-mile round trip hike was a good workout, with 1,000 feet elevation gains with every mile, but the view from the top was worth the effort and the joint pain…

Apenas 15 minutos da cidade de Seward, ainda no gigantesco Parque Nacional de Kenai Fjords, sul do estado, vamos fazer uma trilha para ver o Exit Glacier mais de perto. Imagine duas montanhas, e uma bonita cachoeira, só que ao invés de água caindo, tudo é gelo. E da onde vem a água lá em cima, é um horizonte de gelo chamado banco ou campo de gelo. Quando a neve cai sem parar por mais de 45 dias, o que era macio fica macico e vira gelo. O gelo mais que condensado vira uma geleria, iceberg ou como eles costumar chamar os glaciers. O Glacier se tranforma numa crosta muito dura e por efeitos naturais sua cor de branca (neve) se modifica para azul. O nome da Saída ou melhor Exit Glacier seu deu por ser a única forma de escapar o gelo que se encontra lá em cima. Nossa caminhada de 6 horas nos levou ao horizonte de gelo mais lindo de nossas vidas. No topo da montanha, frio, porém um momento mais que fabuloso estar alí apreciando mais essa obra prima do Mestre lá de cima.
