Chan Chan

After a surprisingly smooth overnight border crossing from Ecuador into Peru and another couple of buses in the new country, we finally made it to our beach destination, Huanchaco.  Surfers flock to this village on the northern Peruvian coast because of its mellow beach vibe and ride able waves.  Sitting just a few miles east of the town are the impressive Chan Chan ruins of an ancient Chimor mud city.  This gigantic metropolis was one of the largest in pre-Columbian America and was the center of the civilization for over 600 years until being conquered by the Incas.  Interestingly, the crisscross design found throughout the ruins is a tribute to the nets used to catch their sustenance.  Although there is still much to be excavated, the standing walls, rooms, and temples allow you get an idea of what this city might have looked like centuries ago.

Busão a noite inteira para cruzar a fronteira entre Equador e Peru. Chegamos em Trujillo, e com mais duas conduções, nosso destino final foi a praia de Huanchaco. Famosa pela galera do surf e super conhecida pelos brasileiros que aqui se tornam famosos pelos suas diversas premiações. Maresia brava, tempo nublado, cachorros nas ruas, e cá entre nós, lugar bem sujinho. Benvenidos a Peru! Mas, a parte boa de estar aqui é que somente a 5km, e já estamos nas ruínas de Chan Chan. O reino Sol-Sol, foi o mais poderoso da América do Sul, só perdendo para os Incas. São mais de 15Km² de pura estrutura de adobe (tijolos de barro, agua e palha)e organização no sítio arqueológico localizado na costa norte do Peru. Mais interessante que conhecer a área é ter uma guia que provavelmente viveu aqui nos séculos passados, porque além do conhecimento, ela até se emociona em contar as histórias desse lugar especial.
