Baños is a small town in Ecuador’s Andean highlands that sits at the base of the towering volcano Tungurahua. Its uncreative name literally means “Baths” and can be attributed to the famous hydrothermal springs in the area that provide waters for visitors from all over. It’s also known as the adventure capital of Ecuador because of the various activities available from white water rafting to bungee jumping to repelling. We decided to slowly ease ourselves into the extreme environment with a mostly downhill bike ride on the Waterfall Route. The 10 mile course is dotted with impressive waterfalls along the road and others that require a little more work (hiking down and up) to access. Dozens of local entrepreneurs constructed mini cable cars that cross the valley and offer a cheap way to get up close to the falling waters. An activity which we opted to skip was the homemade bungee-jump/swing from a bridge. Although the hard-working tandem seemed to have the process down, the setup didn’t look like it had attained any international safety certifications. We capped our excursion later on with our crawl/scoot/walk to behind the Pailón Del Diablo (the Devil’s Cauldron), where we got to see and feel the power of the onrushing water from up close.
