Day 357: Built three times

The ancient city of Uxmal was the last stop on our unofficial tour of the Maya ruins.  It’s about 50 miles outside of Mérida and acknowledged as the most important representative of the Puuch architectural style from AD 600-900.  It’s one of the best restored and maintained ruins in the Yucatan and the beautiful architecture is distinguished by low palaces set around courtyards that are decorated with detailed sculptures.  Without a convenient source of water, the city’s inhabitants were constantly worried about rainfall and their water supply so they summoned the assistance of the rain god, Chac.  We learned all about their preoccupations during the Light and Sound Show that takes place every night after dark.  The loud and colorful state of the art production depicts ancient daily life and was a unique and memorable way to end our ruin hopping trip.

Mais um e até agora o último (pelo menos nessa viagem), Uxmal. Governada pela dinastia Xiu, essa cidade Maya foi a mais poderosa no oeste do Yucatán. Desde a independência do México que aqui é um local repleto de turístas devidos as suas pirâmides e sítio interessante de se conhecer. Porém o objetivo do tour de hoje é conhecer uma ruína quando o sol caí e a lua nasce. Luzes e sons é o nome da apresentação desse site arqueológico de Uxmal que fica aberto até as 21h. Um jogo de luzes, com uma narrativa contando a história Maya e de como eles se comunicavam com os Deuses, principalmente o da chuva pois com a água era possível molhar as plantações, dar moradia aos peixes, e matar a sede. Impressionante admirar os desenhos esculpidos nas paredes e ficar imaginando como várias pessoas se abrigavam alí naquelas pedras, e sobreviveram somente da natureza divina. Vivenciando, tendo a oportunidade de visitar os mais importantes sites Mayas, tivemos a mais pura certeza que é necessário muito pouco para se viver felizes e fortes… a natureza nos provém tudo que necessitamos!
