Day 356: Yucateca song and dance

Lucky for us, there is something interesting going on every night of the week in Mérida for visitors.  From live bands and dancing in the street to a traditional folkloric song and dance performance, the city likes to flex it’s cultural heritage muscles.  The jarana is the typical dance of the Yucatán Peninsula that embodies the indigenous traditions and consists of fancy footwork and wholesome choreography.  The fiesta of brightly colored flowers, elegant white suits and dresses, leather sandals, and refined Panama hats make it an entertaining spectacle.  It’s long history dates back a couple hundred years and blends different influences from around the world.  The orchestra ensemble supplies the music and the rhythm is mixed with Maya influences to create catchy tunes that encourage dance, even for those with two left feet.

Aqui em Mérida, todos os dias anoite tem um evento especial na praça central. Um dia é só para dançar com a banda ao vivo, outro dia é um espetáculo de bonecos, outro dia serenata de amor e hoje anoite uma linda dança folclórica. A Jarana Yucateca é uma dança originária da península de Yucatan. Segundo o dicionário significa diversão movimentada com sapatos barulhentos e roupas alegres. As roupas tradicionais fazem das mulheres ainda mais bonitas e dos rapazes mais elegantes. Mulheres sempre com sapatos brancos e homem com uma sandália de sapateado que juntamente com a orquestra, super bem ensaiada, fazem uma perfeita apresentação. Lindo de se assistir, dá vontade até de dançar.
