Day 349: Tree of Life

Although vegetation can vary substantially within a region, a common sighting that we’ve encountered throughout Central America is the mighty Ceiba tree.  It’s large exposed roots, extremely straight trunk, and high horizontal crown that spreads wide over the jungle canopy are easily recognizable for even non-arborists.  To the Maya, the sacred tree connects the three layers of the world with the roots descending into the underworld of death, the trunk dwelling in the middleworld of life, and the branches reaching to the upperworld of paradise.  For them, it continues to play a central part in mythological legends, wedding ceremonies and other holistic rituals.  For us, it provides a cool, shady shelter from the scorching sun.

Ela é grande, já passamos por várias e nada melhor que descansar à sua sombra. Aqui na América Central a árvore Ceiba é muito conhecida, principalmente nas áreas de Bahamas, Belize e México. Podém crescer até 70 metros de altura e geralmente o tronco é fino e reto. Para a civilização Maya, essa era a árvore mais que especial, era sagrada. As raízes significam a extensão ao submundo e os grandes ramos, tocam o reino dos céus. Muitas vezes eram plantadas no centro de suas praças e raramente cortadas. O algodão/fibra que é composto dentro de suas folhas era utilizado para encher almofadas ou travesseiros. E que segundo a lenda, além de trazer sorte, purifica e fortalece a pessoa que alí dorme e lhe traz bons sonhos.
