Day 331: Laguna Chicabal

Chicabal Lagoon is a mystical and sacred crater lake hidden in a beautiful and tranquil setting about 25 kilometers from Xela.  The sanctified spot is a popular place for Maya ceremonies and offerings are made throughout the year so respect is demanded from visitors at all times.  After a prolonged delay for our bus driver to scarf down his breakfast, we arrived at the starting point of the hike in the little village of “Chile Verde”.  The fun started shortly after as we slowly matriculated the steep ascent for nearly two hours before reaching the lookout point at 2,900 meters.  We appreciated the fantastic views of the calm waters and volcanoes in the background before descending to take a lap around the well-trodden trail as the clouds rolled in.

Secreto, místico e muito especial para os Mayas essa é a Laguna de Chicabal. Localizado na cidade de San Martín, o límpido lago foi formado pela cratera do vulcão Chicabal há milhares de anos atrás. Para chegar até os 2.900 metros de altitude é necessário passar por dentro de uma pequena vila Chile Verde e se preparar para a  super caminhada de 45 graus. Devido a sua importância espitirual, é proibido tocar ou banhar-se na água. Ao redor do sagrado lado há o calendário Maya, que é extremamente respeitado e celebrado com as cerimônias religiosas feitas principalmente na semana santa. Com uma paz impossível de não sentir no peito assim é o ambiente natural de Chicabal.
