Day 327: The tradition continues

Maya women have been weaving for centuries and the traditional traje they wear signifies pride and heritage in modern Guatemala.  The colorful attire combines a multicolored blouse and a long wraparound skirt which is held together by a sash at the waist.  Many women also wear some form of headdress or colorful ribbons that are braided into their long, shiny, black hair.  The blouse is truly a unique work of art which is woven or embroidered, that can take months to complete.  Distinguished by its design, style, and pattern they vary according to region and individual creativity or taste.  The traje has a deep cultural significance and represents a link to the past and to their ancestors- a statement of cultural identity.  It’s refreshing to see them fight globalization and wear something other than the western attire that has spread throughout the world.

Graças a cultura do povo Maya que ainda se faz muito presente, Guatemala é uns dos maiores centros têxtis do mundo. Como a grande maioria dos guatemaltecos são indígenas a herança de tecer tudo a mão e usar cores vivas e alegres ainda é muito persistente em todo país. É daqui que saem as mas belas colchas, toalhas de mesa, cortinas e muitos outros acessórios para o resto do mundo. De toda essa riqueza, e só estando aqui para ver de perto, os trajes típicos das mulheres. Valendo lembrar que cada região tem desenhos diferentes e elas utilizam acessórios diferentes também. Geralmente composto por três peças, saia, blusa e cinto, elas mesmas costuram suas próprias peças com fios e linhas específicas e como os ancestrais lhes ensinaram. Para completar, no cabelo preto e cheio de brilho uma bandana bem colorida. Linda tradição, roupas coloridas e únicas que só Guate tem a oferecer.
