Day 319: This is Guatemala

We limited our time in Honduras and El Salvador knowing that once we got to Guatemala, we would slow the pace down a bit.  Everybody we talked to had great things to say about “the land of the eternal spring” and its distinctive culture that blends Spanish and Maya aspects.  After another chicken bus assisted overland border crossing, we made it into the new country to see if it lives up to the hype.  Under heavy rains, we rolled into the bus station in Antigua just as the market was shutting down for the day.  We got our bearings and then hastily maneuvered through the people, products and produce that resembled a disaster area.  We were thankful the rain finally let up as we arrived to our hostel, and we were happy to make it safely to a new and undiscovered land.

Com o objetivo de aproveitar mais a cultura guatemateca, nosso tempo em Honduras e El Salvador foi um pouco limitado. Estávamos meio receiosos em relação a criminalidade nesses dois países, mas tudo nos passou muito bem, sem nenhum problema. Pelo contrário, nos surpreendemos com o que encontramos. Pessoas super legais, comida ótima, cultura linda e lugares tranquilos. Mas, não vamos mentir que é um alívio danado chegar em Guatemala. Com mais estrutura turística, já tinhamos lido e escutado muitas coisas boas sobre esse lugar. Mesmo com o mundo caindo de tanta chuva, finalmente chegamos na Antigua Guatemala. A estação de ônibus fica ao lado do mercado de frutas e para sair do busão, além de nos aventuras nas ruas inundadas dava para ver várias frutas boiando. São Pedro não deu trégua nem para os pobres feirantes… Mesmo com todo o caos, estamos prontos para conhecer a cultura dessa cidade colonial que ainda é desconhecida para nós.
