Day 300: That’s some lava

There are a couple of places in Nicaragua where night time hikes provide the opportunity to peak over a volcano’s crater and get a glimpse of lava.  Telica is an active volcano about 30 kilometers from Leon and has a large crater 120 meters deep and 700 meters in diameter.  We talked to a guy the day before who did the trek and said he got to see the hot, orange substance from above and we were intrigued to do the same.  The most recent violent eruption from it’s 1,061 meter high peak was in 1948, but the volcano has been smoking and grumbling ever since.  It took a little more than an hour to walk up and we peeked over the edge while trying to stomach the strong sulfur smells.  After watching the sun disappear over the city in the horizon, we got into position on our bellies to wait for the show to begin.  Clouds, smoke, and gases obscured our view of what lingered below and our guide said the hit or miss visibility was because of the heavy rains in the afternoon.  After waiting 45 minutes, the crater opened up and we were able to witness the hot magma boiling and glowing in the depths of the crater and the excursion was a success.

LAVA! Derivada do latim labes, que significa queda, declive. Diretamente do magma, a lava sai do manto da terra. Onde é muito quente, pastoso e considerada a camada mais funda da terra. Com temperaturas altissímas de até 1.250°C é praticamente um lago de fogo. Hoje tivemos o prazer de visitar o Vulcão Telica. O único aqui em Nica que se pode ver a caliente lava bem de pertinho. Para isso, o tour começou as 3 da tarde, e além de conseguirmos ver Leon lá de cima, esperamos a noite cair para que pudessemos esperar pela tão famosa. Na beira da cratera, vários metros de altura, e tendo que deitar no chão para olhar no buraco, foi nessa posição que ficamos anciosamente por uns 45 minutos esperando por um vento mais forte passar, levar o enxofre e a bela e quente lava aparecer. Bryan gritou: Acho que vi algo… Vi algo alí… olhem é laaaavaaaa… Que emoção, vimos bem pouquinho, mas já valeu a pena. O barulho dela batendo nas pedras lá embaixo parecia de uma cachoeira de águas quentes. Muito interessante como a natureza é perfeita e felizes demais por ter a oportunidade de estar ali tão perto de Deus, mais uma vez!
