Day 296: City of Churches

With thirteen colonial churches and cathedrals, León has more places of worship per capita than any other city in Nicaragua.  The centrally located cathedral is the largest in Central America and construction to complete the giant structure lasted more than 100 years.  Local legend claims that the city’s leaders expected their original grandiose design to be turned down by Spanish imperial authorities, so they submitted a more modest but bogus set of plans.  It’s currently undergoing a facelift before a scheduled visit by the Pope in December.  For us, with the fresh paint job it seems to lose some of it’s historical heritage that the other churches in the vicinity still maintain.

Com treze igrejas coloniais e catedrais, Leon tem mais locais de culto per capita do que qualquer outra lugar em Nicarágua. Localizada no centro da cidade, essa é a super antiga catedral. Considerada a maior da América Central e para completar sua estrutura gigante foram mais de 100 anos de construção. Normalmente é possível subir no topo, mas como há algumas renovações no momento, o mirador esta fechado. Toda preparação esta sendo para a visita do Papa em dezembro. Ficamos feliz em saber que as reformas também estão sendo feitas devido a ser premiado como um site da Unesco, mas não podemos mentir que a bela igreja assim, com a pintura velha, tem muito mais essência e é muito mais charmosa!
