Day 285: A walk into the lake

At the most western point of Ometepe Island, Punta Jesús Maria is a narrow strip of land that was formed by water currents and sediments over the years.  The band of black volcanic sand stretches into Lake Nicaragua and can jut out more than one kilometer during the dry season.  It’s rainy season now so the not so clean-looking or smelling water splashes in from both sides and mimics two oceans meeting.  The point is famous for its spectacular sunsets and scenic views of the island’s double mountains.  A third can even be seen on the mainland, which creates a volcano triangle and provides endless photo opportunities.

Aqui na ilha há muitas atrações, além de escalar os vulcões. Tem museu, praia, reserva florestal, passeios a cavalo e até piscina natural. E como nosso exercício favorito é com a bike, vamos sair para pedalar até Punta Jesus Maria. Ao extremo mais oesta da ilha, há um pequeno caminho de areia preta no meio do grande lago. É possível caminhar em torno de 1km no estreito pedacinho de terra e depois disso é só pular e dar um mergulho. A vista de Conception e Madera é divina e parece até que estamos num quadro pintado a mão, de tão perfeito.
