Day 284: Two mountain island

After we left the “Switzerland of Central America” and crossed the border into Nicaragua, we noticed an immediate shift back to the third world reality shared by most of the region.  Our first impression was that the people, the streets, and even the vehicles were a little rougher around the edges.  Heading north, an animated bus evangelist gave all the passengers an earful until we got to the transit town of Rivas which we used as a launching point for Ometepe Island.  The name comes from indigenous words that mean “two mountains” and is an accurate description of the twin volcanoes in the middle of Lake Nicaragua.  The two active peaks form the largest fresh water lake island in the world and are connected by slender isthmus.

Agora sim, voltamos a vida real. Voltamos ao terceiro mundo! Cruzamos a fronteira e a direfença já dá pra sentir na pele. Humildade e simplicidade no olhar das pessoas, das ruas e no ônibus então, Bienvenidos a Nicaragua! Depois de 45 minutos no busão, sujão, chegamos ao porto de Rivas e iremos para a Ilha Ometepe. Como o nome mesmo diz Ome (dois) Tepetl (montanhas), são dois vulcanos irmãos no maior lago de água doce do mundo. São 276km² e com uma população de 42.000 habitantes sem medo de morar tão perto de dois grandes bichos que ainda são ativos conectados por uma reserva florestal que fazem forma de uma ampulheta.
