Day 280: Night walk through the woods

We took our hostel’s 2 for 1 offer to do a night walk to see what the forest’s nocturnal creatures were up to.  The first thing our guide explained to us was that there were no guarantees to see any animals because nature is not a zoo but then went on to warn that the area was populated with jaguars.  Thankfully, the rain stopped just before we started and the animals seemed to be out and about in the cool, damp weather.  He noted that it was not every day that people see a mother owl feed its young like we witnessed.  Seeing all the animals at night was a new experience for us and provided a different view of things.  It was clear to us that we were in their world as they went about their nightly activities.  The coolest thing that we saw was the glow in the dark trees and roots that lit up when we turned off the flashlights.  Impressively, scientists are researching ways to copy this natural technology to light streets someday in the future.

Eu estava meio com receio, principalmente porque existem vários insetos super ativos a noite, mas vamos lá. A selva durante o dia é linda, mas a noite é mais do que especial. Primeira coisa que o nosso guia nos explicou foi que não havia nem garantias nem o dinheiro de volta se caso não vissemos nenhum bicho, porque nunca se sabe o que pode acontecer na floresta. Acrescentou dizendo que outro dia mesmo, ele estava passeando com um grupo, muito sortudo por sinal, e que viram uma onça descansando numa árvore. Graças a Deus, a noite não foi para onça mais sim para vários pássaros dormindo, mãe coruja alimentando os filhinhos, aranhas, formigas e sapinhos. Não sabíamos, mas a natureza esta cheia de organismos que brilham no escuro e o destaque da noite, sem dúvidas, foi quando no meio da escuridão nosso guia nos pediu para apagar as lanternas. Começou a nos explicar sobre os pequenos componentes genéticos que existe em alguns tipos de raízes e que se iluminam naturalmente. Tipo o filme Avatar mesmo, rs! Quem sabe, um dia, não será uma opção para quem não tem energia elétrica por perto…
