Day 278: Climbing Trees

After a few muggy days in La Fortuna, we were ready for the cooler, misty mountain setting of Monteverde.  We cut across the calm Lake Arenal by ferry and then winded up a dirt road to arrive at the crown jewel of cloud forest reserves.  The various shades of green foliage and countless eco-adventure activities make the area a hot spot for nature lovers.  Unfortunate for us, the bungee jumping and canopy/zip line tours are not priced for our budget so we’re getting creative with our time here.  Freddy, our hostel owner, told us a great “free” activity was a tree that we could climb a few kilometers away.  He said it was around 40 meters high and we could scale all the way to the top so we set out for the famous “Ficus”.  The old strangler fig tree provided us with some cheap thrills and a peaceful treetop level view of the surrounding forest.  The hollowed out center was like climbing through a wooden tunnel slide handcrafted by Mother Nature over hundreds of years.

Como Monteverde esta na lista das 14 cidades para visitar antes que desapareça e é uma das sete maravilhas da Costa Rica, pegamos um barco de La Fortuna e já estamos aqui. Na realidade queríamos um lugar mais tranquilo, sem tantos gringos ao redor. Aqui pelo menos, podemos falar mais espanhol, conhecer mais a cultura local, algumas caminhadas são gratuítas inclusive subir nas grandes árvores, se quisermos. Estamos absmados com a quantidade, beleza e diversidade das árvores daqui. Em especial a Figueira que você pode entrar dentro. Essa que escolhemos nos aventurar tinha uns 40 metros de altura. As raízes são enormes, e como ficam fora da terra é possível trepar e se sentir o macaco subindo na gigantesca criatura. Lá de cima, silêncio total, paz interior e se colocar a cabeça pra fora da árvore, pode ser um passarinho cuco ou podemos brincar de onde está Wally? Porque quem esta lá em baixo não consegue te ver direito. Natureza perfeita, interessantíssimo ver e se sentir parte de uma árvore por alguns momentos.
