Day 260: Fallen flat

Of the many attractions inside Casco Viejo’s walls, the Arco Chato, or “Flat Arch” is probably the most peculiar.  Originally built in the 17th century along with the Santo Domingo church, fire destroyed most of the building but the arch remained as everything around it fell into ruins.  Built without any support and almost no curve, amazingly it lasted until 2003 before finally giving in to gravity.  They say that it stood as a testament to the fact that Panama was spared from major seismic activity and contributed to the case to build a major channel in the area.  Some of the pieces from the original were left on the ground and the rebuilt new one strives to defy gravity like its predecessor.

Originalmente construída no século 17, a igreja e convento de Santo Domingo fazem parte da história da Cidade do Panamá, principalmente após o incéndio os destruiu grande parte em 1756. A única coisa que conseguiu sobreviver por séculos foi o Arco Chato, bem na entrada do prédio. Sem curvas, nem nenhum outro tipo de suporte, foi poupado de muitas atividades sismica. Mas, como nada é para sempre, em novembro de 2003 tudo foi por água abaixo. Essa que conseguimos ver na foto, é uma replica da antiga. Atualmente as ruínas de Santo Domingo estão passando por restauração e eventualmente será um espaço para apresentações artísticas, exposições e eventos culturais.
