Day 233: The journey is the destination

Ciudad Perdida, or the Lost City, was hidden in the dense jungle of the Sierra Nevada Mountains for hundreds of years before it was “discovered” by treasure hunters in 1972. It was inhabited by the Tayrona Indians between the eighth and the fourteenth centuries and today, circular stone terraces and plazas along with tiled roads outline the city that once was. Getting to Teyuna, as it is known by the indigenous people, involves a multiple day trek that is popular with travelers seeking a moderately difficult adventure walk through lush, green vegetation and beautiful tropical forest landscapes. The round trip journey is 45 km and the distances are broken down into smaller segments over five days. Several small streams and waterfalls dot the path along with some river crossings so taking a dip to cool off is frequently an option. Our lungs and legs were on fire after the first steep uphill climb on Day 1 but we made it to camp and shortly after called it an early night.

Não sabemos direito nem onde vamos dormir, nem o que vamos comer, só estamos em busca de uma tal Ciudad Perdida! No meio das montanhas, na Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, foi a casa da Tribo Tayrona entre os séculos 11 e 14. Para chegar lá vamos atravessar vários rios, cachoeiras, cruzar a floresta cheia de fauna e flora, pontes de suspensão e caminhar muito. Estamos contando com nossas pernas e pulmões. Machu Picchu da Colômbia, assim como os nativos chamam, Ciudad Perdida foi contruída aproximadamente no ano de 700 d.c. e foi o centro urbano mais importante entres as 250 aldeias indígenas. As partes da cidade foram feitas por paralelepípedos e pedras enormes localizadas nas encostas. Estamos super empolgados e cheios de energia para entrar em forma em tão poucos dias e conhecer um mais da história desse lado do pais.
