Day 215: Onboard the Minnow

As if the dozens of beaches and tropical beauty of Margarita Island wasn’t enough, Rosa wanted us to see nearby Isla de Coche as well. The smaller, arid, fishing island is located south of Margarita and has about 7,000 inhabitants who welcome the thousands of tourists looking to enjoy the unspoiled beaches and excellent wind and kite surfing conditions. We hired a little boat that was captained by a man who steered the outboard tiller extension with his knees while standing and holding for dear life. His crew consisted of a couple of young boys that were learning the ropes as midshipman and didn’t instill much confidence if he got thrown overboard by one of the bumpy waves. The return trip was exhilarating for all the passengers and was like a water park ride with the bouncing, rocking, and water splashing. We were happy to make it back with the boat in one piece and thankful our life jackets weren’t needed.

Porque não conhecer uma ilha dentro de outra? Essa foi a pergunta que Rosa nos fez quando chegamos em Margarita… e não foi difícil de nos convencer em conhecer a Ilha de Coche. Localizada entre Margarita e o continente é lá que encontraremos uma areia branca, brilhante e com àgua translúcida para passarmos o dia. Elevada à 60 metros do nível do mar, a pequena ilha tem apenas 11km e 7.000 habitantes. Nosso dia comecou quando entramos no barco dos pescadores para uma carona de 30 minutos até chegar no paraíso tropical. O mar estava super agitado e parecia que estávamos numa montanha russa de tanto frio na barriga que sentimos. O capitão dirigia com os joelhos e seus assistentes não tinham mais de 15 anos de idade. Rosa se agarrava no colete salva-vidas e não se mexia. E eu e Bryan gritavamos e dávamos risada ao mesmo tempo. Finalmente chegamos bem, aproveitamos muito e não estávamos prontos para voltar, mas não tinha outro jeito. Que medo!
