Day 208: One big, happy family

Doris is the youngest of five children that were raised in a traditional Venezuelan family which continues to be the foundation and a priority for each one.  The three brothers and two sisters either live in Carúpano or not so distant Puerto La Cruz so it doesn’t take a special occasion or holiday for everyone to get together.  The 12 offspring among them are aged 5 to 17 and share a more “sibling type” relationship because they are always around one another.  We enjoyed the birthday party festivities the first night we arrived and felt like part of the extended family being around the house.  Doris always spoke fondly her her dad and even though he passed on more than five years ago, his memory and presence is still evident.  Her mother is the conventional matriarch and it’s somewhat amusing to see the adult children scramble about to keep things tidy in her house to avoid her wrath.  We admire the united, close-nit family and hope to be surrounded by our own kids and grandkids someday as well.

Nossa amiga Doris é a caçula da familia de cinco irmãos. A maioria deles vivem aqui em Carúpano e nem precisa ser feriado para eles se reunirem. Qualquer final de semana normal já é motivo para a galera estar junta, fazendo um churrasco e dando muitas risadas. São vários primos, quase na mesma idade e a maioria homens, então o futebol rola solto. Assim, tornando a amizade ainda mais bonita entre família. Sortudos que somos, já na primeira noite que chegamos aqui, tivemos a oportunidade de cantar parabéns aos primos Jesus, José e Luis. É lindo estar perto deles e sentir que o núcleo familiar sempre continuará unido, mesmo sem o pai de Doris estar presente (ele faleceu mais de cinco anos atrás). Dá gosto estar por perto e saber que não existe nada como nossa família! Queira Deus que um dia, tenhamos a oportunidade de estar assim no meio dos filhos e netos.
