Day 204: A sweet rice drink

Chicha is a delicious drink made with rice (and sometimes pasta), milk and sugar, served with crushed ice and topped with ground cinnamon and condensed milk.  It’s as refreshing as it is filing and the sweet drink is popular with kids as well as adults.  El Chichero is the name of the man who sells the drink and most often transports the thick liquid around in a modified bike with a big cooler filled with the ingredients.  Venezuela has found a way to industrialize many of its traditional food and drinks and you can find aisles full of cartons of Chicha at the supermarket.  Although we’ve seen more rug rats drink it than adults, we’ve become fond of the tasty refreshment and have enjoyed knocking back a few with our young friends.
