Day 202: The ice cream bean

Guama is a wannabe fruit that resembles an oversized bean pod with a sweet cotton like edible fiber on the inside.  It’s actually not a fruit but rather a giant legume that can reach the length of a person’s forearm.  The pods can be easily cracked open to expose the white, sugar-rich pulp, similar to cotton candy, surrounding the seeds.  It was our first time trying the fruit so our friend Thomás gladly gave us a demonstration on how to open it up and enjoy the goodies inside.  His son, Thomacito, is not much bigger than each pod and can’t get enough of the ice cream bean.

Uma vagem gigante que contém sementes envolvidas com uma polpa muito saborosa assim é a Guama, ou se preferir Ingá. Eles falam que é uma fruta, mas na realidade é um legume e que muitas vezes pode até ter um metro de comprimento. Mais uma diversidade da nossa querida floresta amazônica que nascem geralmente em torno dos rios e pode-se encontrar em toda América do Sul. Nós particularmente não havíamos conhecido e é muito saborosa. Já nosso amigo Thomas e seu filho, são apaixonados pela  mesma e comem sempre que podem. Um fruta exótica literalmente exótica.
