Day 183: The legend of Iracema

We left our beloved São Paulo behind to move on to the northeast region of Brazil which is full of unique culture, music, and foods.  Fortaleza is the capital of the state of Ceará and it’s coastal location and continuous sunny weather attract millions of domestic and international tourists every year.  The city is sprinkled with statues of the well-known figure, Iracema, who is the main character of a novel with the same name written by the famous Brazilian writer José de Alencar.  The romance novel tells the story of the indigenous Iracema and Martim Soares Moreno who was the first Portuguese to explore Fortaleza.  It’s been nice to see her around town and welcome us to this wonderful city.

Deixamos nossa querida cidade de São Paulo porque Iracema está a nos aguardar. Na capital cearense,  ela está em todo canto. Como uma mãe que protege Fortaleza, a  legendária personagem do escritor José de Alencar é símbolo de beleza e cultura. Essa é a mais bonita e fica alí mesmo na Beira Mar. Com poucos anos de vida, foi inaugurada em 1996, porém, esculpida pelo grande Zenon Barreto em 1960. Mesmo com o corpo fino e com essa tanajura ela é simplemente a moça singela e desejada como nos livros do grande mestre. Como todo seu charme e delicadeza, nessa estátua, Iracema estaria dando adeus para o seu grande amor… Iracema… a lenda do Ceará.
