Day 148: A visit to Bo-Kaap

Bo-Kaap is a unique and historic neighborhood situated on the slopes of Signal Hill close to the center of Cape Town.  It was settled by descendants of slaves brought over by the Dutch in the 17th and 18th Century that originated from different parts of SE Asia, but were referred to as “Cape Malay”.  Steep streets are lined with colorful traditional houses, painted in vibrant colors and the Cape Malay community is proudly Islamic.  Several mosques dot the cobbled streets and we saw many locals walking along wearing traditional dress.  We enjoyed a pleasant stroll through the streets and took in the distinctive Islamic culture that still appears to be intact and thriving.

Bo-Kaap é um bairro único e histórico situado no Signal Hill, aqui perto do centro de Cape Town. Foi formado e colonizado por descendentes de escravos trazidos pelos holandeses no século 17 e 18. As ruas desse bairro são estreitas e as tradicionais casas são pintadas com cores vibrantes. A comunidade é muito orgulhosa de estar por aqui ainda e manter a história do lugar. Existem vários pequenos mosques espalhados no meio das casas que as vezes é difícil de saber o que é residência ou o que é lugar de oração. Hoje aproveitamos nosso dia andando e apreciando como mesmo depois de anos a cultura ainda continua intacta principalmente por aqui.
