Day 133: A hot day’s work

Our boss, Edmund, let us know before the day started that it was going to be a hot one (100+ degrees) and not to forget our water and sunscreen. There is no place to hide in the field when the sun is beating down so proper precautions are necessary for farming rookies. We also borrowed some straw hats which are great for a little shade as well as giving us a cool “farmer” look. One of our jobs that we hope to finish before we leave the farm is removing the wire trellis strung between the wood posts that are lined across rows spread over more than 5 acres of land. The area has been fallow for a few years so there are a lot of weeds and other overgrowth that like to wrap around the wires, making the job a big pain. Eventually the land will be cleared by a bulldozer but because of the lines, this task requires some manual labor. We make sure to take plenty of water breaks in the shade to cool down but even then, the sweat doesn’t stop to pour out of our bodies.

Edmund nos avisou: – Coloquem bastante protetor solar e não se esqueçam de tomar muita água hoje porque a previsão é de sol quente. Mas não imaginamos que seria 39 graus das 8 as 5 da tarde. Nosso trabalho de hoje foi ficar cortando e enrolando arrame velho. Ainda bem que o arrame não era farpado, mas depois de algumas horas, mesmo usando luvas, já dava para sentir os calos em nossas mãozinhas. Os arrames servem para separar as videiras que morreram há anos e estão super secas. Seria bem mais fácil só vir com o trator e quebrar tudo, mas infelizmente não é possível. Para a nova plantação é preciso cortar todos os arrames (porque os mesmos vão para reciclagem), tirar todos os pequenos postes (que seguram os arrames) e tudo tem que ser feito manualmente. Depois do almoço o sol continuou rachando na nossa cabeça e tivemos que ter vários descansos na sombra de uma árvore. Conseguimos fazer uma grande parte do terreno, porém ainda tem muitoooo trabalho pela frente. A melhor parte do dia foi quando Bryan tirou a bota e o suor que estava no pé dele dava pra encher um copo : ((
