Day 118: Happy New Year

There was no hyped up countdown on TV to ring in the new year for us and we welcomed in 2013 from the airport in Johannesburg.  Our flight itinerary from Lilongwe to Port Elizabeth had an overnight stopover in “Joburg” which meant that we had another night of “free” accommodations.  At about 10:00 PM we were by ourselves at our gate and thought everyone had forgotten about us but we were eventually evicted from our comfy 4 seat cushioned benches and relegated to find another spot.  We ended up squatting in a Passenger Assistance Center with some office furniture so we were able to construct a couple of makeshift beds and get some shut-eye.  Two women from Rwanda had the same idea so it wasn’t quite a party, but we were safe and thankful to have another year of possibilities in front of us.

Deixamos 2012 lá em Malawi e iniciaremos 2013 na África do Sul. Não houve contagem regressiva, nem retrospectiva da Globo, nem fogos de artifício mas tivemos um bom vinho e queijo para começar o ano bem, passando a noite no aeroporto de Joanesburgo, onde foi nossa ponte áerea para chegar até Porto Elizabeth.  Praticamente sozinhos no aeroporto, estávamos alí nos arrumando para dormir até que o guarda vir e nos colocar pra fora, quero dizer do lado de fora da segurança, porque não pode ficar ninguém do lado de dentro até as 6 da manhã. E foi até melhor porque encontramos várias poltronas super macias que juntamos e fizemos alí nossa caminha improvisada. Para nos fazer sentir melhor, havíam mais duas mulheres conosco, que estavam na mesma situação. Noite de virada especial é assim, com direito a dormir no aeroporto e tudo! Feliz Ano Novo!!!
