Day 117: Sausage Tree Spottings

Crossing the huge expanses of undeveloped land in our overland travels has supplied some backdrops that have made us think, “This is Africa”.  The time spent in the various taxis, buses, and Matatus has exposed us to a variety of landscapes, animals, and vegetation that seem like scenes from “The Lion King”.  One of the first things our guide pointed out to us on our safari, and that we have seen plenty of since, is the Sausage Tree.  So named because of the giant cylindrical fruit that hangs upside down and grow for months to become over a foot long and weigh over 10 pounds.  The “sausages” cannot be eaten but are used for medicinal and cosmetic purposes.  The unmistakable fruits are easy to spot from afar and therefore make the trees a good spotting game target on long rides…

Já foram vários meios de transporte, e por várias terras ainda em desenvolvimento que já cruzamos o continente africano. E com toda a belíssima paisagem vimos, as vezes, dá até vontade de nos beliscarmos e dizer para nos mesmo: – Isso é África! São vários cenários verdes, cheio de plantações, animais, pessoas rurais, o céu azul e sem contar nas árvores de todos os tipos. Essa é a árvore africana chamada Salsicha. Sim porque os frutos gigantes que nela ficam pendurada se fazem juz ao nome. As “salsichas” crescem de cabeça para baixo durante meses e pessam em torno de 10 quilos. Pode ser usada como fins medicinais e cosméticos apenas, nada de ser ingerida na hora da fome. Curiosa como mostra na foto, essa árvore consegue ser reconhecida de longe e impossível não ficar impressionado quando ao passar por perto.
