Day 102: A day at the beach

Life at a beach town is a little slower and we’ve enjoyed the downtime to get some planning done for our next destination.  We make sure to visit the beach every day though and during our walk along the calm waters in the late afternoon, we decided to sit down and take it all in for a bit.  Our impression of how the Kenyans enjoy the surf has been something different and intriguing for us.  They don’t lay out and veg under the sun but rather bob up and down in the waves, play in the sand, or just cool off in the water.  The swimsuits they use are modest compared to others we’ve seen and some men even use their underwear as a make-shift speedo.  While we were sitting there, a little girl and her younger brother came up and started to build a sand castle right in front of us.  She was a little timid at first but we could tell she had a happy spirit and she was outgoing- ready for an encounter with the strangers.  After a bit we started to make some small talk and she even made an early birthday cake and sung Happy B-Day for Márcia.  We sensed the purity of the happiness and innocence that we felt around her and it was a great ending to the day in the sun.

Hoje nosso dia foi bem tranquilo. De manhã, planejamento para Tanzania, hotel, transporte, o que fazer, etc… e a tarde, além da nossa caminhada pela praia, sentamos e para observar as pessoas. Primeiro que eles (os nativos) não ficam na praia quando o sol esta raiando, eles só aparecem no final da tarde. Eles também não ficam expostos ao sol, como os brasileiros largatixas. Biquini? Não, as meninas usam sempre shorts e blusinha, ou camiseta, ou entra de calça jeans e tudo. Algumas crianças ficam de maio/sunga, mas tudo é muito comportado. O negócio deles é ficar brincando na areia e entrando no mar, nada de exposição explícita ao sol. Ficamos observando dois irmãos brincando, e que felicidade. Sofia sentou na nossa frente e começou a conversar conosco. Perguntamos se ela estava fazendo um castelo de areia, e ela disse que estava fazendo um bolo. E já que faltam poucos dias pro meu aniversário, pedi para ela fazer um bolo pra mim. E que linda, ela fez, cantou parabéns e ficou super feliz por eu pedir uma foto com ela. Presente de aniversário que não tem preço!!!
