Day 94: First game drive

Lake Nakuru National Park is located about 90 miles northwest of Nairobi in the picturesque Southern Rift Valley and is famous for its pink flamingos and an ecologically diverse ecosystem.  The long-legged creatures feed on the algae that is created from their droppings mixed with the warm alkaline waters in which they majestically wade.  It’s not just about the birds at this premium park though, and we saw hundreds of other animals during our safari’s first game drive.  The size and the apparent strength of the white rhinos was especially impressive, like dinosaurs from prehistoric times.  We also saw a couple of lions relaxing lazily in the high grass underneath a shade tree.  The lake and the surroundings made for a great introduction to the African Bush and we’re looking forward to seeing more animals from the wild kingdom.

Famoso pelos seus flamingos rosas, estamos no Lago Nakuru. Cerca de 140km ao noroeste da capital, o Parque Nacional fica no belo Vale do Rift. Com terras vulcânicas, sua pequena quantidade de água, e profundiade de mais ou menos 1 metro conferem a proliferação de algas azul-verde, microorganismos e de pequenos crustáceos para a alimentação dos flamingos. Ao redor do lago, cerca de 450 aves terrestes fazem moradia. Podíamos ver as montanhas e as pastagens para mais de várias 56 espécies diferentes de mamíferos, incluindo o rinoceronte branco e búfalos d´água. Vimos duas leoas descansando nas margens do lago, e pareciam ser mãe e filha, porque a pequenina estava de pernas para cima. Eles chamam de game-drive, e dentro da nossa van, nosso motorista vai dirigindo pelas ruas esburacadas do parque até encontrar os animais. Quem vê primeiro grita para o outro olhar, é uma verdadeira caçada à procura dos animais no seu habitat natural. O lago é simplesmente lindo e parecia que estavamos entrando num dos shows do Discovery Channel. É um espetáculo único que nos fez compreender melhor a força da natureza.
