Day 92: A baby’s bottle

The Nairobi national park is special because it is the only one of it’s kind that is situated literally inside a city.  Visitors can see lions, rhinos, leopards and buffalos among other wild animals roaming the confines of the 29,000 square acre set of land that is located just 7 kilometers from downtown.  The park is also home to the The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trusts’ Orphans’ Project which is a small conservation charity that seeks to protect and rear orphan elephants and rhinos.  Unfortunately, poachers still kill many adult elephants for the valuable ivory in their tusks, leaving the babies alone in the bush to fend for themselves.  They have little chance of survival without their nurturing, protective mothers, and are brought to the orphanage with the hope of eventual reintroduction into the wild.  The elephants stay at the park in Nairobi for up to three years and then they are transferred to the larger Tsavo National Park for up to nine more.  The goal is that one day they will be able go back into the wild and live a normal elephant life.  We got a kick out of seeing the would-be giant animals bottle feed for an hour and even decided to become “foster parents” to “Narok” for a year…

Você sabia que eles vivem por mais ou menos 70 anos? Que eles tem cerca de 3 metros de altura e pesam entre 5.000 ou 6.000 kilos? Pois eh, estamos falando dos elefantes africanos. Hoje tivemos o imenso prazer de visitar o orfanato dos elefantes aqui em Nairóbi. Quénia é muito conhecido pelo seu grande Parque Nacional  que fica localizado há 15km do centro da cidade. Infelizmente a caça ilegal pelo marfim ainda é muito grande na Africa, então é nesse momento que os bebezinhos ficam orfãos. O orfanato David Sheldrick recebe os babies elefantes que são encontrados na selva sem os pais/família, machucados e que não conseguiriam se defender sozinhos. Lá eles tem abrigo, aulas de sobrevivência na selva, convivência em grupo, muito carinho além das mamadeiras gigantes de leite. Eles permanecem no orfanato por 3 anos e depois são transferidos para outro parque maior onde a aclimatização é feita até os nove anos de idade. A esperança é que depois de todo trauma, eles possam ser introduzidos de volta na natureza e que nosssos amigos brincalhões voltem a viver uma vida de elefante normal. É muito especial ficar observando eles tomando o leite, brincando, escorregando, caindo e até jogando bola. Eles são bebezinhos, mas já são maiores que nós. Seremos pais adotivos da bebe elefante Narok. Por um ano estaremos ajudando ela a ter o suporte necessário para que no futuro ela possa ter uma família, seus filhinhos e se o destino permitir, nunca abandoná-los.
