Day 86: Are we still in India?

As the largest city in India and its commercial center, it’s easy to note that Mumbai is the most cosmopolitan and modern place in the country.  The infamous film production hub, Bollywood, is also located here so countless movie stars and other entertainment insiders call it home.  It’s well-known for its striking “non-Indian” Gothic architecture that displays a distinct European influence with many buildings dating to the British period.  One of the busiest and most famous of these is the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus station.  As we explored the southern part of the city by foot, we noticed there were streets of Art-Deco buildings and later learned that only Miami has more.  Our first impression of “Bombay” was quite different from our small glimpse of India.  The people seem more civilized, the streets seem much cleaner, and the modern world does not seem so distant.  Many have told us that the “real India” is in the villages but we’re happy to be here for now, as our journey ends in this country like no other.

Com grande influência portuguesa, Mumbai ou Bombay, assim como é conhecida, é a maior e mais importante cidade da Índia. Com sua região metropolitana, aqui se encontra o cinema e a televisão indiana, transações comerciais e financeiras e mais de 70% da atividade portuária do país acontecem aqui. Conhecida pelas suas arquiteturas, fomos dar uma volta na cidade e realmente, você consegue sentir a sensação da cidade cosmopolitana. Com belos prédios, a arquitetura é antiga e espetacularmente conservada. Chhatrapati Shivaji é a estação de trem mais antiga, além de ser patrimônio mundial Unesco. Parece estação da Luz (se você conhece São Paulo). As pessoas parecem ser mais civilizadas, as ruas parecem ser mais limpas, e o mundo moderno que parecia ser tão distante aqui da Índia, estamos felizes de ter encontrado. Sabemos que pelos lugares que já passamos realmente, conhecemos o país como ele é, mas estamos super felizes de terminar nossa viagem no mundo indiano mais civilizado e na boca, um gostinho de quero mais.
