Day 72: The Blue City

Jodhpur is the second largest city in the state of Rajasthan and the many palaces, forts, and temples make it a popular stop on the state’s tourist trail.  It’s also a city of nicknames, having acquired several over the years that distinguish it from other places.  It is known as the Gateway to Thar because it literally sits on the edge of the Thar desert.  It is known as the Sun City because the sun shines almost every day of the year.  And it is also known as the Blue City because most of the houses in the old city are shades of blue.  Although no one is quite sure about the origin, one theory is that the priestly caste wished to distinguish their homes from the rest of the population and eventually others followed suit.  Some locals speculate that the light shaded color keeps the interiors cool and fends of mosquitoes.  Regardless of what sparked the trend, the houses make for a colorful backdrop in the city of nicknames.

A cidade de Jodhpur é a segunda maior do estado de Rajastão. Parada turística por seus palácios, fortes além de ser a porta de entrada de volta à cidade, depois de passar pelo Deserto Thar. Aqui o sol brilha quase todos os dias do ano, então ficou conhecida como “Cidade do Sol” ou, também podemos chama-la de “Cidade Azul” porque a maioria das casas são pintadas da cor azul. Embora nínguem saiba ao certo o porque das casas serem azul, acredita-se que essa tradição tenha começado devido ao sistema de separação de castas existentes na Índia, assim os sacerdotais poderiam se distinguir do resto da população. Outros dizem que a cor azul conserva o interior das casas arejado e afasta os mosquitos. A cidade é uma gracinha, e o tom azul faz dela muito charmosa. Já que aqui pode-se ter vários apelidos, sem precisar ser científicamente comprovado, o nosso apelido para a cidade é: “a cidade com motorista sóbrio”, porque temos um novo motorista, nos parece ser legal e mais responsável. Podemos continuar nossa louca jornada um pouco menos preocupados.
