Day 46: Monkey business

Ubud is described as the cultural center of Bali due to the local arts and crafts, architecture, and traditional activities within the town and villages nearby.  Before we did any real exploring we decided to visit the Sacred Monkey Forest located on the main strip in the city which is aptly named Monkey Forest Road.  Within the first couple minutes of entering we saw dozens of monkeys scarfing down snacks (bananas, cucumber, cassava, passion fruit, etc.) donated to them by other visitors.  The almost 350 monkeys make up four groups within the forest and there are constant turf battles with screaming, running, and swatting.  The park staff keep watch and assured us that the primates wouldn’t go after us unless they were provoked.  Even with that guarantee, the climate was somewhat tense as we walked through the paths.  It might also be because we had watched the Rise of the Planet of the Apes a few weeks earlier…  The monkeys exhibited some “humanish” behavior and it was interesting to watch them eat, play, clean each other, feed their young, and relax from up close.  We finished the visit with all of our “bananas’” and were happy to leave without any monkeys on our back…

Já estamos em outra cidade chamada Ubud. Centro cultural de Bali. Da nossa pousada, de um lado é a pura floresta tropical (Indonésia é a segunda maior do mundo depois do Brasil) e do outro só se vê os arrozais. No meio da mata atlântica nativa fechada, é onde moram livremente os mais de 300 long-tailed macaques. No chão, nas árvores, comendo, brincando e até brigando eles estão em todos os lugares na Sagrada Floresta dos Macacos. Os macacos são muito engraçados e inteligentíissimos. Eles sabem que as pessoas e no parque mesmo. eles terão comida, então, é bem mais fáci só ficar ali esperando um lanchinho. Vimos de tudo um pouco. Um dando um tapa num homem (muito engraçado por sinal), outros estavam brigando, e não sabíamos se era por causa de mulher ou território, mas a briga foi feia, que tivemos que sair de perto. Vimos até um casal nos momentos íntimos. E a mãe macaca com seu macaquinho, que coisa mais linda! Essa região da Indonesia é rica em maracujá e eles adoram a fruta, além das banas é claro. Nos divertimos muito em poder estar tão perto daquelas criaturinhas tão espertas.
