Day 12: Land of the Setting Sun

We decided to do a nice little mountain hike after visiting Ginkaku-ji (The Silver Pavilion) and fighting the late afternoon crowds there.  We read a tip to be at the top at sunset because the views overlooking Kyoto to the west at that time are absolutely amazing.  It took about 40 minutes at a leisurely pace to reach the summit and we had worked up a decent sweat by then.  The views lived up to the hype and it was refreshing to cool down with the gentle mountain breeze.  There is a festival, Daimonji, every August in which giant bonfires shaped in Chinese characters are lit on mountains surrounding the city for everyone to see.  The belief is that the fires send off deceased family members to the spirit world after they finish their visit for the festival in this world.

Hoje acordamos com a corda toda e decidimos fazer um trekking. Depois de visitar outro Templo lindo chamado Ginkaku-ji conhecido também como Pavilhão Prateado, resolvemos encarrar a serra no meio da floresta em torno de 40 minutos. Subida pura, com direito a pernilongo louco e água da nascente pra matar a sede. E valeu muito a pena chegar lá perto das nuvens e ver que Quioto é uma cidade mais linda ainda olhando de cima pra baixo. Outro detalhe interessantíssimo e que no topo da montanha, todo dia 16 de agosto eles fazem cinco fogueiras (dentro da floresta – juntando as cinco montanhas que se encontram) com o símbolo de Daimonji (大文 – que seria essa letra em chines). A fogueira tem como objetivo celebrar os espíritos das familias que vem visitar o mundo terrestre e desejam que os mesmos retornem ao mundo espiritual.
