Day 343: Green Stones

Yaxchilán, Green Stones, is an ancient Maya city lost among the thick layer of tropical forests that run beside the Usumacinta River.  An hour long boat ride along the mighty waterway that separates Mexico and Guatemala is required to reach the hidden location.  It’s known and appreciated for its large number of architectural structures, well-preserved carvings, and inscriptions with legible texts dispersed on stelae, altars, and doors throughout the compact site.  An impressive staircase with hieroglyphics links the Grand Plaza to the Great Acropolis which is dominated by a magnificent roof combed temple atop.  The humidity made our visit “sticky” but we enjoyed our pleasant stroll through the ruins while the howler monkeys added to the jungle soundtrack.

Yaxchilán é uma antiga cidade Maya perdida entre as florestas tropicais ao longo do Rio Usumacinta. Foi um longo passeio de barco, as margens do rio e de um lado podíamos ver Guatemala mesmo estando em território Mexicano. Ao chegar no misterioso site arqueológico as imensas estruturas são de tirar o fôlego. Esculturas muito bem preservadas, textos e desenhos legíveis e dispersos nos altares, paredes, portas além das escadarias que doem os joelhos de tão altas que são. Além da malhação de ficar caminhando, subindo e descendo muralhas, o sol também não nos deu nem um descanso, mas estamos feliz pela oportunidade de voltar ao tempo de novo, e agora ao sons e ruídos da selva como música de fundo.
