Day 294: What’s that sound?

Howler monkeys are named and known for the prehistoric, guttural howls they emit which can travel for three miles through dense forest.  Especially prominent in Nicaragua, there are several species found in Central America and adult males weigh up to 22 pounds.  Heard more often than seen, they hang out high in the trees and are aptly named due to the loud vocals they produce.  Not just a grunting contest, the noises send a clear message to other monkeys that the territory is already occupied.  We have imitated the sounds while hiking through their turf a couple of times and have been greeted with an intimidating and unrelenting welcome.

Eles são pequenos, pesam em torno de 9 kilos, mas fazem um barulho que quem não sabe o que é, tem a impressão de que é um dinosaurro fominto. Desde que chegamos em Nicaragua está impossível não perceber os macacos Bugios. Eles estão em toda parte, principalmente nos parques e andam sempre em família. Por possuírem vocalizações distintas é possível ser ouvidas a quilômetros de distância. E não é só a voz que é diferente com esse bicho, mas ele não gosta muito de banana, prefere as folhas e vegetações, super light. O macaco-uivador, como eles chamam por aqui, faz juz ao nome.
