Day 224: The Great Liberator

The iconic Simon Bolivar was a military and political leader during the revolution against the Spanish Empire in the early 1800’s.  One of South America’s greatest generals, he led victories over the Spaniards to win independence for present day Bolivia, Panama, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia.  “The Liberator” is a hero to millions and the love and respect he garners is visible through the thousands of Bolivar Squares throughout the region.  The one in Bogotá is located in the heart of the historical area and his statue in the middle was the first public monument in the city.  Important landmarks such as the Primary Cathedral of Bogotá, the Palace of Justice, the National Capitol, and the seat for the mayor.  The plaza has gone through several changes over the years and has housed a huge garden, a bullring, and even a parking lot.  Today, the beautiful square is a great place sit, relax, and watch people go about their lives.

Um herói visionário, revolucionário, libertador e peça chave nas guerras de independência da América Espanhola, assim foi Simón Bolivar. Como um bom venezuelano, além de ser militar, era também muito político e foi presidente de muitos países aqui nesse lado do mundo. Durante seu tempo de vida, liderou a Bolívia, Colômbia, Equador, Panamá, Peru e Venezuela à independência. Ou seja, tudo isso era um único país chamado Grã-Colômbia e agora são vários países pequeninos. Mesmo separando-os ajudou a base ideológica democráticas nos lugares onde passou. Essa é a Plaza Bolívar, aqui em Bogotá. E a maior curiosidade é que esse lugar já teve muitas fases. Uma época já foi um grande jardim, outra mudança que ocorreu e se tornou um estacionamento gigante, um terremoto que passou e a praça ainda continua de pé. Claro que alguns prédios já foram reformados, mas o estilo europeu continua lindo e a energia é demais em estar alí tão perto de tanto história.
