Day 139: Picking Buchu

Agathosma is the name the shrub that is native to the Western Cape in South Africa that we’ve gotten to know pretty well over the last several days.  Because of it’s pleasant herbal smell, one of the primary uses for the flowering plant commonly known as buchu is to make aromatic fragrances for perfume.  The essential oil is used as flavoring for teas, candy, and even liquor.  It is also utilized as an herbal remedy for gastrointestinal and urinary tract issues.   “Buchu tea” was a popular drink in the late 19th century because it was thought to posses natural healing powers.  Edmund received an order for 400 kilograms so we’ve been busy with our sickles cutting the small shrubs and collecting the powerful leaves.

Agathosma é o nome ciêntífico e se você for na farmácia comprar ninguém vai saber, mas se você pedir pelo conhecido Buchu (se pronuncia burro), ai os sul africanos poderão te ajudar. Aqui na fazendo tem essa erva para dar e vender. Ela cresce que nem erva daninha, porém somente nessa área montanhosa de Cape, exclusivamente na África do Sul. Uma mistura de cânfora e menta, o cheiro é inconfundível. Por ser um forte aromático é utilizado para fazer óleos essenciais e perfume. Com mais utilidade na área medicinal, é excelente para problemas de infecção urinária e picadas de mosquito. As pequenas folhas também podem ser utilizadas para adicionar aroma e sabor aos licores, vinhos e bebidas alcólicas em geral. Essas ervas que colhemos hoje Edmund, não usará aqui na fazenda. A mesma será vendida para um laboratório e pra isso até o final da semana precisamos de mais de 400 kilos, então temos trabalho pra caramba pela frente.
